So, from what he had gathered from everything he'd seen, he was stuck in this game (he'd tried logging out for nearly six hours straight and had stopped once he'd gotten frustrated enough to throw a decorative vase across his inn room), he had no money, no equipment, and no idea how to get out. It was a very small comfort to know that he wasn't the only one in this situation.
Then again, part of the comfort depended on someone else having a way to get out, and if that was the case, wouldn't people be able to leave by now? Surely some asshole wouldn't figure out how to leave and then just go without telling the other people.
...no. That would definitely happen.
Searching the town and the surrounding area had yielded little knowledge. The eastern field was full of mobs, and if he'd kept going, then he would have found a dungeon with even more mobs in it. Not cool at all. So Shade had gone south, away from the forest where it supposedly snowed all the time, and come across... a giant rock in the middle of the road.
"Odd," he muttered under his breath as he reached up to place his palm against it. It was warm to the touch (perhaps from the sun, but odd as it was supposed to be winter here), and it had strange markings carved into it. He traced the marks with his fingertips. "How am I supposed to move you...?" @open! ★ these things here probs mean somethin'

"It could be level geometry." A dull voice rang out from behind Shade as Melon brought up the rear. It was mere coincidence that drew her towards the same rock that he had been investigating, but it wasn't as if there were many other things for her to do without any actual money or gear to speak of.
Well, there was the option of fighting mobs unarmed, but that could be incredibly unpleasant depending on how combat was handled here.
"Or there could be a physics system involved. But... Then you definitely won't want to try moving that." Adjusting her glasses, she strolled right on up to stare at the markings on the rock. She remained like that for a few moments before snapping her head sideways to stare Shade next.
"Or you could, but... Be careful. You don't want to clip through the floor." SHADE★ does bunny hopping work

Shade turned at the sound of a voice, but he didn't keep his eyes on the girl for long. Instead, he turned back to inspect the runes, touching them again. "I doubt it's a physics engine. Probably something to do with magic. I seem to recall that was a feature listed on the game box when I was looking it over."
Even though her warning about clipping probably didn't mean anything, he took a step back and tapped the ground with his boot. "This isn't in beta, is it?" he asked. "I really hope they've fixed things like that. I can't imagine the cold wasteland that the places with broken textures would be in this place. Though it might be awesome with noclip turned on."
He shoved his hands in his pockets and flicked his eyes up to her name bar, then back down. "I'm Shade," he said, in no mood to trumpet his real name to a bunch of strangers, even if there was nothing they could do with the information. "Mm. Perhaps. Physics engines are usually a given these days, anyway." Forgetting (or perhaps ignoring) her own advice from earlier, Melon traced a finger along the markings slowly and confirmed the warmth of the stone. Magic was certainly the easy way to explain it, but... That wasn't good enough for her.
"If it is, it's certainly more impressive looking than other betas I've been in." Shaking her head lightly, she pressed her palm against the rock next to test just how much it would warm up her hand, but withdrew it moments later. Just in case it really was going to glitch out something.
Turning to Shade, she took a similar turn in glancing at his name before taking his hand to shake it as well. "Melon. A pleasure, Shade. What do you think would happen if someone actually did noclip through the ground?" There wasn't much humor in her voice, but she did sound intrigued by something. "Or broke through the skybox?" One handshake later, Shade had turned his attention first to the ground, then up to the sky. "Hadn't considered it," he said. "Maybe if you go high enough, you'll meet whatever passes for god in this place. Low enough... wouldn't be surprised if someone sick enough to trap living people in a game were sick enough to program in a hell, too. There are gods, apparently, so..."
He shrugged a little and turned to lean back against the stone, tilting his head back against it. Clipping hadn't happened yet, and if it did, maybe it would make some interesting glitches happen. If nothing else, he'd find out whether or not it hurt.
"So what, you a design student or something?" he asked, raising his hand to shield his eyes from the sun. He really missed his hat. "I mean, game design. Or do you just have a scholarly interest in the workings of the game?" MELON★ change your gui to pig latin and turn the skybox pink

"That would be... Doubtful. Space, maybe. It would be impressive if they actually programmed a lack of atmosphere at that height, though..." Melon sighed lightly as feeling the rock didn't seem to be doing much. She tensed up for a moment as Shade started leaning on the thing, relaxing only after he... Didn't explode or anything of that sort.
Maybe this really was coded well.
"No, no. That wouldn't offer me many career options. You... Could say it's a scholarly interest." Taking a moment to clear her throat, she adjusted her glasses again before backing away slowly look the rock over again. Large, definitely too heavy to lift, and possibly magical. If there was any physics engine involved with it, there really was only one way to make sure.
"It just happens to coincide with breaking things." She inhaled deeply, then took a running start at the rock before ramming into it with her shoulder. Would it move? Would it stay right where it was? Would she actually take damage from it? Only one way to find out. SHADE★ just turn the entire skybox into an animated gif of Knuckles

Shade barely registered the fact that Melon was charging at the rock before he scrambled out of the way, narrowly avoiding being shouldered himself. "Jesus," he muttered under his breath, turning around to see her just as she slammed into it.
Unsurprisingly, the rock seemed very unimpressed by the feat of strength, going so far as to do absolutely nothing except sit there, being a large rock. Shade examined it, looking it up and down, before turning to look at Melon.
"Do you feel better now?" he asked, hooking his thumbs in his back pockets. "Please tell me you didn't actually expect that to do something." MELON★ please never make an mmo

That did not work. That did not work at all. Still, it was a valuable experiment from such a simple action. The rock didn't move, so that confirmed a few things. Melon's HP was just as full as it was before the impact, so there were some limits on self-damage.
Running into that rock still hurt a lot, though. Biting her lip as she staggered back slowly, the girl turned away from shade for a few moments to until the pain subsided. Once she was certain she could speak again, she turned back to him with a quick nod.
"It acted as expected. Since it isn't affected by physics, this must be some sort of landmark or quest item. We can still hurt ourselves, but..." She pointed a thumb at her health bar, pausing for a moment before realizing he might not actualy see hers. "Our health does not decrease. That may be limited to combat or statuses."
Another pause. "... It also hurt a lot. I do not recommend trying it."

"Yeah, I usually expect body-slamming a rock to hurt," Shade said as he moved back to the rock and tried to peer around the edge as best he could. "It looks like the road goes on past the stone. Maybe you're right about a quest thing... certain requirements need to be fulfilled and the stone goes away, or something. That begs the question of how big this world actually is, though."
He moved away from the rock a couple of steps before turning back to look at the town to the north. "...I'd hope so. This world is too small to hold all ten thousand people who supposedly got copies of this thing."
Stretching his arms over his head, Shade grunted quietly. "So. We can hurt ourselves but not lose HP. I guess that means suicide for people who get desperate is out, unless you count throwing yourself into a mob you have no hope of surviving. Think it extends to sickness, as well?"

"... It was a necessary test." There was just a brief crack in Melon's demeanor as she said that, turning quickly to circle the rock herself. Granted, the idea was rather stupid in retrospect and in any other sense of general thinking, but testing needed to be done!
"Ten thousand, you say... Hm. Well, I do hope food and water doesn't become a problem any time soon with so many people consuming it at once." However far the road went, Melon wasn't too keen on heading down too far just yet. Not before figuring out the limits of her movement options, but that would have to wait until there were other people more willing to test stupid things in her stead.
That rock really hurt.
"And death by mob may just return us to a spawn point. But... I would rather not test that theory just yet." Turning back to Shade, she stared at him for a long moment before glancing towards the rock again. Or specifically, the bottom of it. "That may just be limited to status effects. But it's been a long time since I last played anything where you could actually die from poison, so I doubt it."
