Was he stuck? Yea. They were too. Bu' familiar faces seemed ter make things feel juss a bit less dire. They had, at th'moment, split and gone their ahhn ways, bu' it was an easy PM an' they could figger ahht who was where an' schedule another rendez-vous. Right now 'e had set them up on a small....mission ov a sort. Gather information, see if may'ap any uvver players know anything....got a different message....maybe somebody was a beta tester or programmer for th'game....anything. Th'least they could do though was just scope ahht th'land. KING was on tahhn duty.....which was a bit uninterestin' ter be frank. He'd bin in th'tahhn before...when 'e first showed here. It was....mmmmn....honestly a bit...boring? ...Well comparatively. It could ov juss been replaced with any old generic fantasy tahhn an' not much'ud have changed.
Bu' he had a job ter do. And so he was gon' ter scope ahht wot 'e could. There was plenty ov shops......th'baker, th'butcher, some antique-selling bloke, erm.....there seemed ter be a place for merchants ter hawk their goods too? An' he'd thought he saw a smithy or something. Right nahh 'e was standing outside ov a tea shop ov all things. Which.....mostly covered this pahht ov the tahhn. Oh and the inn. There was an inn 'ere. He could go ask abahht how many people was staying.....if 'e could get a number an' figure out who all was staying where, he could......mmmmm.....do something? ...He could also try ter spend some time looking fer uvver kids.....'e knew there was still some ahht there wot didn't have a place ter stay or was just plain scared. He din't blame them a'cahhrse...it was a scary situation nae being able to leave th'game.
KING opened th'menu, tapping into his inbox an' hitting compose. He din't stop walking, jus' kept an eye ahht fer movement sah he din't run inter anybody.
Yo, KING her guys, update on the town. Lots of probably unnecessary stores here....Im outside a tea shop for crying out loud. Theres lots f players in this district, but I think theres more in the north cause of more residences there to stay at.
I got the cheapest food place pinned if we need supplies quick since we dont have much gold to start. There's also a hgg
KING's typing grahhnd ter a halt as 'e himself walk rahht inter someone, hand slipping ter th'g as 'e started losing his balance. He managed ter catch his footing, though, an' fahhnd himself blinking in confusion as 'e readjusted his eyes from 'typing message mode' ter 'pay attention to wot's arahhnd yea' mode. Golden-brahhn eyes peered straight ahead an' he fahhnd himself looking at....um, a lil' lass prob'ly nae a year past him. KING bit 'is lip, scratching th'back ov his head.
"Er, oi, ye'alright? Din't mean ter run into yea." ....Actually this was nae e'en a kid he recognized th'tag ov. Aria? Nae any screenname 'e was familiar with. Which meant.....'e juss stumbled across perfect recruitment material. It was not something he needed to look for to see; however he did wish that he could better read the boy's thoughts....what he was interpreting the words to mean. Because clearly, he was going about this entirely wrong. He wondered if perhaps it would have, in this situation, been better to outright lie. Sisu is my X relative by my sister. Anything. He took another several steps back, away from the boy, giving him a little more distance. If he wanted to go now, to flee, that was fine. Though he doubted he would...of what little he could read, the boy was cautious, extremely suspicious, even perhaps a bit paranoid; turning his back on Charles would be the last thing he would want to do.
Though it did bring to mind a question for the cop, the question of why. Certainly, stranger danger was first and foremost a concern to be aware of. But even then that couldn't be all. Charles' initial interaction with the boy had not been unusual...admittedly yes, he called him by a name that clearly wasn't his, but misconception was commonplace. The boy was suspicious even then. ....Actually no there were two questions. The second.....why was no one else doing, saying anything? It wasn't as though Charles was making himself subtle - and based on his little understanding of games....would it not make sense that the other townsfolk would take notice? ...Unless they were not standing within the radius of the....noticing range. But that wasn't entirely it either, because some of them smiled and waved....at him, specifically, not so much as a glance at the boy. Clearly, they didn't notice...or know, at all, what was going on. Which just further drove home the reality of this child's uniqueness.
The boy started writing again and Charles watched his hands attentively, eyes flicking every now and again to the boy's. A couple times he could feel the twitch of a frown try to tug at his lips, but that was not....he was not Eden, right now. He managed to keep the downward curve at bay, a neutral, though concerned, expression taking its place instead. He blinked slowly. The boy was of course right....and this, this was what he got for treating him like the rest of the AI he presumed to find in this game. He sort of shot himself in the foot here. "I suppose I am, but it's what most people call me out of town. If it would appease....make you feel better, my name is Charles." He wanted to smile, but felt that would be....the wrong thing to do. He sighed heavily. "And, you never had to give me your real name you know. I asked, what do I call you -- because, really, anything outside of 'boy' would be just fine." At that he broke a squinty half-smile for...the briefest moment.
He cocked a brow at the snide little remark about this Sisu. Didn't.....say anything, just cocked a brow and gave a shrug of the shoulder. What was there to say? Nothing that would win him any points here. The boy was finally done though, closing his book....a forcible end to the conversation, well, that was all right. He turned one quarter away from the boy, letting him start along the path to...the marketplace he presumed. He didn't want to follow close...and the boy most likely wouldn't let him. He walked slow enough to keep a certain distance from the boy, decidedly ignoring the constant looking back he did. He could meet the boy's eyes or smile or...but it would just make him more suspicious. He just followed quietly and let the other lead, until suddenly he broke at a run, heading towards a woman with a long skirt. His mother. A small amount of heaviness he felt in his chest dissipated....good, his mother, he perhaps would feel a bit more at ease.
Charles kept at his steady, slow pace as he approached, the woman looking at him with an expression he wasn't sure he could read....for one of two reasons. He smiled at her, bowing his head. "Hello, miss. I'm sorry, I believe I've spooked your son..." He decided to start....conversationally, in case she was just like him, unique. When she had been signed on, it was just a bunch of matrices with test scripts and low-poly objects. Hell they didn't even have any real environments when she wrote this thing up. It felt pretty real on a base level, but that didn't really intrigue her quite as much as the physics renderer did. Like holy shit what did they have to give up to get this thing rendering so smoothly? Admittedly video game code wasn't her native territory, but she knew enough about it....like, shit, what kid didn't write a basic video game in Unreal when the damn thing came out for free? ....Not that it actually mattered since she'd already torrented the full version when it was released.
She loved the physics in Unreal....but what the shit kind of engine was this that they were running on? Good god, she really wanted to see the brains behind this thing. From what she could tell, they might have built their own engine from scratch. Half of her just wanted to look at every little detail in the game and try to figure out what kind of object file it was, how the AI ran, and what language it was scripted in. She felt like she was flying as she walked about in the grassy field, letting herself get lost in the literal feeling of the game. It was kinda like a drug in a way, it just felt so cool to be....literally able to sense things in game. Would it be the same with injury? Would she feel if someone stabbed her in the stomach or sliced off her head?
It was a seriously exciting thought, though not enough for her to experiment upon herself right this second. Nah she'd need someone else to volunteer.
She stopped walking, though, as she spotted a chick sitting in the middle of the field not ten feet away from her. The question was, player or NPC? That could be answered decently. Most NPCs had a certain proximity detection where they'd automatically respond to a player character. Time to test that, then. The girl turned, shifting her direction so she was headed towards the strange redhead with a sauntering step. Nine feet. Eight, seven. Six, five. Nothing and nothing. By now an NPC would have responded...which meant this was a real player.
Not quite as easy to experiment with, but still, she could learn something about her.
Emmie grinned, waving to the girl. "Yo, over there. What's up?" she called casually. Would she get anything out of her? Would she ignore? There was something about this girl that seemed intrinsically interesting. Maybe it was the bright red hair, maybe it was jus how...nonchalant she seemed. Hopefully she wouldn't disappoint.
