The church was small and well-tended. It looked cozier than any of the temples he'd visited in his life, that was for certain. If he'd still been Shinto, he might have been uncomfortable with the flippant way religion was treated in games like this. But, hell, better than them trying to adapt an actual religion into something else. That was just a massive problem waiting to happen.
The woman outside the church was pretty enough, for someone who was just a collection of code and numbers and-- damn, he was over-thinking this. "Hello," she said, her smile unnaturally bright and cheerful. "What can I do for you?"
"Um, hey," Makenai said, frowning. Was there a dialogue tree he was supposed to be following? When she didn't say anything, he continued, "We're here to help with the, um, the eggs thing?"
"Oh, praise Adustum," she said, clasping her hands in front of her chest. According to the words above her head, her name was Sister Helen. "I was so afraid that no one would come! It's a very simple task. Do you see those chickens?" Pointing around, she indicated what could only be described as a flock of chickens searching for bugs and worms in the dirt off to the side of the church. "If you wouldn't mind collecting twenty eggs for me, I would be so very grateful! The chickens are a little suspicious of strangers, but they won't really hurt you. Would you mind?"
Well, no, that's why they were there. And then, with two baskets (big enough for ten eggs each), she cheerfully shooed them away to begin work. Makenai sighed. "Great. Do you know how to gather eggs, by any chance?"

The conversation with the NPC confirmed two things. The first was that they were fully voice, as she expected them to be, and that there were no dialogue boxes in the actual game, unless that was something that happened later on for some reason or another. The second was that they had different prompts, and in all honesty, they could probably be walked away from, without there being any issue at all. A unique thing, that much was for sure.
Was it true for all of them? She already heard rumors of some glitched NPCs, but had yet to encounter any in her wanderings. How different were they? Would they have certain triggers as well, or were they as sentient as possible within the world of the game?
"Usually, uh... eggs are in nests, in coops. They're just sitting around. I don't see any actual eggs." Looking troubled, she approached one of the chickens that was wandering around further from the pack, pecking at the ground. When she reached out to touch it, the symbol of an egg appeared over it. It pulsed ten times, then suddenly, there was an egg in her hand.
"...okay, that was one of the weirdest things I've done in my life." Her eyes widened. "Did I just make an egg with a chicken?" MAKENAI★ at least it's not gathering milk yet

Okay. So you just... touched chickens and got eggs. ...that was... weird. Makenai followed Mint and looked at the egg in her hand. "I really hope not, because if so, this game just got even creepier."
He went to another chicken and repeated the process the way that Mint had. Just as before, ten seconds had passed and he had an egg to put in his basket. "Wonder if you can just gather stuff however or wherever you want," he said. "...is there a cooking skill in this game? Because I hate cooking and I really don't want to have to learn that all over again."
Shit, the very thought of having to re-learn how to do everything basic in living was an off-putting concept. What he wouldn't give for a skateboard and a baseball bat. He was too old for that shit now, but it would be familiar enough to give him some comfort.

"Someone in the inn was making sandwiches and cutting fruit up earlier. I'm guessing there's a cooking skill, if that is any indication. The entire thing just sort of wrapped itself in a box when she finished." She looked so happy about it, too, when all she did was make a sandwich. Eh, she'd probably be happy to successfully make something in the game for her first time as well. If the cooking skill had any kind of system to it, like gathering eggs seemed to, it would make life so much easier.
When she got two eggs taken care of, she took one from the basket to examine it curiously. "Why do we need to eat? It's just our minds here, so why do we still get hungry? Why do we still feel the need to eat, or feel pain, or have to use the bathroom, or take baths, or any of it?" It was a weird thing, one she wasn't fully sure of.
Her body was back in the real world. If she was lucky, they moved it to a hospital to monitor it. "...and what happens if someone takes our headset off that is keeping us linked in?" MAKENAI★ I will never forget that night in Emain with Mitsu and everyone

Makenai put his own third egg in the basket and touched a chicken again, waiting. If only it was this easy in real life. "It makes sense," he said, putting away the fourth egg once the timer had run out. "I mean... you know about hypochondriacs, right? Their brains can convince their bodies that they're sick. I mean, I've read stories about people who were so positive that they were pregnant or had cancer, their bodies actually started exhibiting the symptoms even though there was technically nothing wrong with them. Minds are fuckin' powerful."
Before he could say anything else, a chicken leaned forward and pecked his finger. "Ah! K'so," he hissed, shaking his hand and resisting the urge to punt the bird over the roof of the church. It just clucked at him balefully before walking away.
"...anyway... if this thing is so convincing that it can trick our brains into believing we're actually hurt, or hungry, or tired? We will be. ...as far as the headset being removed, I don't want to think about it." MINT★ uuuuugh no what i'll always remember is gathering spider silk in tir chonaill and running back to the spinning wheel

If they died in the game, they died in real life. It was a simple fact, even if it wasn't all that welcoming. It was kinder than real death, she supposed, because people already discovered the existence of the revival timer. Some people believed there were skills that allowed for self-resurrection as well, and as reckless as she was, she really hoped it was the case, because it could save her life in the future.
And if the headset removed... she asked just because she wanted a different answer than the one she assumed. It'd fry their brains most likely.
The pecking almost made her laugh, until it happened to her, and she stared at the chicken with a scowl marring her features. Another egg down, taking her to four. Not going too shabby if she did say so herself. Twenty would be a cinch between them in no time at all.
"You said tanking and heavy hitting is more your style. Do you have any idea what kind of classes there are in the game? I'm hoping for something with speed and stealth, honestly, just because... yeah. Makes it easier." MAKENAI★ I do not miss gathering and crafting and weaving hnnng

Another egg in the basket. If only all of his jobs could be this easy. ...but that was a dangerous line of thinking, because as soon as he settled in, this game was probably going to hit him straight up in the face with difficulty.
"I did some research on the game before it came out," Makenai said as he stretched. Five down, five to go. Apparently, if you touched one chicken too many times, it pecked you. Best to spread it out, then. "They didn't have all the details, obviously, but from what I saw... you have your basic swordsman, thief, archer, priest, etcetera classes. Then, the higher you rank, the better your class gets. They were calling it ascension in the alpha build, but I have no idea what it is now."
He touched another chicken and waited obediently for the chicken to give him another egg. "You could always go for a thief class. I'm probably going the swordsman route, because that sounds like it'd turn into a knight class or something like that." And, six eggs. MINT★ crafting sucked, man

A thief, huh? It'd be a lie if that wasn't appealing, just for the fact that those kind of classes tended to rely heavily on speed. Moving in fast, getting away fast, being able to take a few hits and deal a few hits... yeah, it was more her style than something like a swordsman, or a priest, or a mage. Just trying to imagine her standing around waiting to heal someone made her skin crawl. She respected those that had the stomach for it, because she sure as hell didn't. She wanted to deal damage and keep moving, not hang back away from a fight.
...Azure might have some issues with that. They hadn't really discussed that too much in game yet, but one of them was going to eventually get hurt. They'd probably both die a few times. As long as they were brought back, it was fine. Question was, what if they got in a situation where they couldn't be brought back? Then what? Did they just stand around and watch the other really die?
He favored combat as much as she did. Neither of them would take the healer path. It would do both of them well to find someone who was cool with watching their health, or they were going to suffer for it later on.
Seven eggs in the basket and a number of pecks later, she was feeling fairly good. "In a few days when I'm more comfortable with this world, I think I'll check out that first dungeon. Worst case scenario, it goes to hell. Best case, things kind of work out, y'know? Might be something good there. Up for trailing along, too? I already know at least one other person who will be all over coming, so we've got some numbers going for us." MAKENAI★ and it never really became all that useful :\
